The NDP is putting pressure on the Liberal government to finally bring charges against Volkswagen related to their cheating on emissions tests. Today, a lawsuit has been filed against Environment Minister Catherine McKenna for refusing to properly investigate and prosecute the VW diesel engine fraud.
“What possible reason could Minister McKenna have for not bringing about charges?” asked NDP MP and Critic for Innovation, Science and Economic Development, Brian Masse. “The Liberals say that combatting toxic emissions and climate change is a priority but then they refuse to hold this corporation accountable. It’s unacceptable.”
In January, VW pled guilty and the United States government secured $15 billion, including $2 billion that will be used to build electric vehicle infrastructure across the country. Canadian law dictates that VW could be liable for more than $100 billion in damages creating a strong incentive for the company to quickly settle.
“The Liberal government has a duty to pursue corporations who break the law and pollute the environment but they continue to drag their feet,” said Masse. “Enough is enough. It’s time for McKenna to do her job and prosecute this massive scandal.”
