NDP Transport Critic, Robert Aubin (Trois-Rivières) made the following statement:

We are greatly concerned with the events leading to the derailment of a Canadian Pacific Railway train in Toronto this past weekend. While we are encouraged that the Minister responsible for rail transportation has said he will act quickly to determine the cause of the derailment, the federal government needs to do much more to ensure our communities are protected.

Reports indicate that this derailment lead to a spill of over 1,000 litres of diesel fuel directly beside a residential area. Additionally there were other hazardous materials on-board that thankfully did not leak into the local environment.

The federal government promised to improve rail transportation safety standards, and these events underline the importance of bringing in those changes quickly.

Additionally, this fall the NDP will introduce a bill to improve transparency of hazardous shipments and give communities a greater voice in regulatory action to prevent future rail disasters. We hope we can count on the Minister and all Toronto area MPs to support this important piece of legislation.
