Campbell River — Rachel Blaney welcomes the report of the Standing Committee on Government Operations and Estimates which clearly recommendsthatCanada Post reinstate door-to-door delivery.

“This is a step in the right direction,” Blaney said.  “I’m optimistic that people in North Island-Powell River might see improved mail delivery. That said, we’ve seen the Liberal government ignore a number of important recommendations recently, including the electoral reform report that called for more proportional representation in our voting system. I hope the government will take these recommendations seriously and act quickly.

The NDP firmly believes in Canada Post’s public service role. New Democrats recently proposed postal banking as a new path for Canada Post, while preserving and enhancing traditional mail service. Unfortunately, this idea was rejected by both the Liberals and Conservatives without due consideration.

Many Canadians are interested in postal banking,” Blaney said.  “Rural communities across Canada have expressed their wish to use the post office’s infrastructure to meet the needs of smaller centres, especially as many banks close branches in small communities. Postal banking and other good ideas must be explored.
