M-70: Amendment to the Old Age Security Act

Ensures seniors won't lose their GIS if they file their taxes late

North Island-Powell River MP Rachel Blaney's private Member's motion calls on the government to estimate a senior's income for the coming year, for the purposes of securing their Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS), when the senior is unable to file their taxes on time.

Read the motion.

Currently, the most vulnerable seniors in Canada lose their GIS benefit if they do not file their taxes by the annual deadline. This can happen because the senior is ill, or needs help filling out income tax forms. They should not be punished for needing more time. All seniors need the assurance of knowing they have a reliable, secure income and that they will not miss out on benefits because of daunting paperwork required by the government.
