Support a National Strategy on Food Waste

Food waste is unnecessary and results in negative impacts economically, socially and environmentally:

  • over 11 million metric tonnes of food is wasted each year in Canada costing upwards of $49 billion
  • it is abhorrent that we waste good food while some people go without
  • eliminating food waste will aid in reducing greenhouse gas emissions

Work must be done to educate people on how to manage food at home to reduce food waste, as well as to encourage food producers and distributors to take action to reduce waste.

The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted challenges with food security and food management, and it has also awakened Canadians to local opportunities for the food production cycle.

So, we call on the Minister of Agriculture and Agri-food to establish a national strategy to reduce food waste in Canada.
