MP Blaney attends the opening of the 2SLGBTQI+ wing of the Canadian Human Rights Museum
WINNIPEG – On Thursday, NDP MP Rachel Blaney (North Island – Powell River) attended the opening of the Love in a Dangerous Time exhibit at the Canadian Human Rights Museum. Blaney was invited to attend by the Rainbow Veterans Organization.
“I’m honoured to have gotten to celebrate this historic exhibit,” said Blaney. “For decades, 2SLGBTQI+ members of the Canadian military, Royal Canadian Mounted Police and federal civil service were mistreated, interrogated and removed from their jobs, based solely on who they loved.”
Between the 1950s and 1990s, in what was known as “the Purge” efforts were made to remove these brave people from the workforce, citing that they were a threat to national security. The Love in a Dangerous Time exhibit reflects on this dark history.
“This is an important exhibit and serves as a reminder of how far we’ve come, but also how far we need to go in making sure everyone is safe in the workplace,” added Blaney. “I’m looking forward to this exhibit making its way to Campbell River and I hope everyone comes out for it.”
The Love in a Dangerous Time exhibit will be in Campbell River on February 3rd. As part of this exhibition, the Campbell River library will be hosting LGBT purge survivor and veteran of the Royal Canadian Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Steven Deschamps.
