Open net salmon farms are once again in the news because the federal licenses for many sites on our coast are up for renewal. Since being first elected in 2015, MP Rachel Blaney has been clear and consistent in her position in favour of a transition to closed containment in alignment with the 2012 Cohen Commission's recommendations, and the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People.
Lisa Marie Barron, the NDP's critic for Oceans, Fisheries and the Canadian Coast Guard, recently tabled bill C-258 to end open net salmon farming in BC waters.
